Distance, Irony and Discomfort
article posted Nov 18, 08:19
Now, no one likes a touch of cynical humour more than I do… And I can toss out a camp old movie reference, or gigglingly cite an episode of some ’80s TV show, with the best of them. That said, in recent years I have to admit to occasionally wondering whether the culture had become entirely dominated by irony, trapped in a grotesque (and self-indulgent) spiral of the meta.
It has, sometimes, all felt a bit too much.
Apparently, I’m far from alone in this, ‘cause this piece puts some of my strange feelings into tightly-argued words.
Have a look. It can’t hurt to give the matter a little thought.
