The Costs of Creating
article posted Sep 1, 04:34
There’s an interesting piece up here that deals with some of the largely-unspoken issues around a career in the arts, journalism or media.
The questions the article broaches have long bothered me: how does one make a place for oneself in fields in which even the most “entry-level” of entry-level opportunities are so hotly contested that some folks will take them on for free? How can one support oneself when such unpaid work is increasingly the norm for any “opportunity” to get through the door?
And, since all of this is – obviously – related to class and privilege, what does that say about the shape of our culture, since these industries are what shape it? Whose culture is it?
Have a look. It’s worth mulling over.
